The Internet Is Becoming an Intelligence Layer

A continuing exploration of how AI is changing the relationship between people, information, search, authority, and the internet itself.

Collection · Multi-Part Essay Series · By Eric Wing

The Thesis

The internet is changing from a place we navigate into a layer that interprets the world for us.

For most of the internet's history, people searched for information, visited websites, compared sources, and formed conclusions themselves. The web was a place you went, and understanding was something you assembled yourself.

AI is beginning to sit between people and that underlying information. Increasingly, people are not simply navigating the internet — they are asking intelligent systems to do the navigating on their behalf.

  • interpret
  • summarize
  • compare
  • recommend
  • decide what matters

This series explores what happens when the internet becomes not just an information layer, but an intelligence layer.

This changes more than search.

  • Discovery

People increasingly encounter synthesized answers before they encounter individual websites.

  • Authority

AI systems must determine which sources, entities, and signals deserve trust.

  • Brand

A brand can be represented, summarized, compared, or omitted without controlling the interface where that happens.

  • Websites

Websites increasingly serve both human visitors and machine interpretation.

  • Marketing

Visibility is becoming less about occupying a position and more about being understood within a larger information environment.

  • The Internet

The web may increasingly become infrastructure beneath an intelligent intermediary rather than the destination itself.

AI Doesn't See Your Brand the Way You Do, and Why That Matters for GEO

AI systems encounter an organization from the outside, inferring who it is from scattered signals. What that means for brand, evidence, and generative engine optimization.

The next installment explores why GEO is a broader discipline than SEO for AI, and how authority and trust change when machines interpret information first.

  2. AI as interpreter
  3. Discovery changes
  4. Authority changes
  5. Brands must adapt

Collection Note

Why I'm exploring this.

The intelligence-layer idea began as an attempt to make sense of several changes happening at once: AI search, answer engines, changing website behavior, machine interpretation, and the growing importance of how information is structured and understood.

Rather than treating each change as an isolated marketing trend, this collection explores whether they are part of a larger shift in how the internet itself functions.
